インドの西の果て、カッチ地方のアジュラクプールの工房で外国人ブロックプリンターとして活動する向井詩織さん（Shiori Mukai Textile）のブロックプリントの布を、インテリアに取り入れ易いようファブリックパネルに加工しました。

向井詩織さんは、ブロックプリントが持つ「“手で押す“という行為のダイナミズム」、「ブロックプリントだからできる表現」をさらに拡張し、1柄1枚しか作らないというスタンスのもと、伝統的なアジュラクプリントではタブーとされていた、重なり、ずれ、かすれを意図的に強調したり、伝統的な木版以外の素材を版として使用したりと、伝統をリスペクトしながらも、この技法が持つ可能性を追求し続けています。

ブロックプリントの「ブロック」とは、主に木版のことを指しています。手彫りで細密な模様が施された木版で、スタンプのように布に染料を押していく、インドの伝統工芸です。一回一回、人の手で隙間なく連続して押すことで、リピートする模様が染められます。

本来、再現と量産を目的に発達したブロックプリントですが、「手彫りの木版」と「人間の手で押す」ことによる微妙な「揺らぎ」(重なり・ずれ・かすれ）により、厳密に言えば世界に同じ布は1枚しかなく、私たちはそこに現代の機械印刷にはない魅力を感じているのではないでしょうか。

日本では、京都を拠点に制作＆展示活動、田中直染料店との共同開発でブロックプリントキットの開発も行い、ワークショップやトークショーなどとあわせ、ブロックプリントを広める活動をされています。
