1938年、当時24歳でドイツ生まれの家具商の息子ハンス G・ノールによってニューヨークで設立したKnollは、バウハウスが父、クランブルックが母と例えられるように、双方のデザイン思想と関係を経て発展しました。その親交からミースやサーリネン、ベルトイア等、錚々たる建築家やデザイナーとの画期的なコラボレーションが生まれ、20世紀デザインに多大な影響を与えることとなります。

この書籍ではハンス＆フローレンス・ノール夫妻をはじめ、ミース・ファン・デル・ローエによる名作「バルセロナチェア」、エーロ・サーリネン、マルセル・ブロイアー、イサム・ノグチらが手掛けた作品、専属デザイナーによる家具、テキスタイル、広告のグラフィックデザインを、約400点の図版とテキストで詳しく解説しています。
